What was supposed to be his first shot at a title could now end up being just another hard earned paycheck. For the second time in consecutive fights Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez’s opponent has pulled out of the fight with only a week to go before they were set to square off.
This time it’s Cuban welterweight Damian Frias (16 – 1 7 KO’s) wanting no part of the Columbus High school graduate.
All was set for “Twinkle Fingers” to make his nationally televised debut while in search of the vacant WBC Latino welterweight crown when just a week before the fight Hernandez was informed Frias had backed out.
“Because he’s a bitch”, said the 24 year Hernandez when asked why his second foe in as many fights had backed out at the last moment.
Hernandez (15 – 0 8 KO’s) will still headline ESPN’s Friday night fights card live from the Mahi Shrine Temple on June 5th. What remains to be seen is if the Miami native whom has ended his five previous fights by way of knockout will get the opportunity to capture his first title.
No replacement has been named yet and while the bout could still be for the WBC Latino welterweight belt it first must be approved by Florida’s boxing commission.
Rumors swirling around point to Ed Paredes as a potential replacement. Paredes whom just fought last Friday night at the Fountain Bleu Resort is coming off a rematch victory over Gilbert Vinegas whom scored a TKO win against him earlier in his career.
Hernandez vs. Paredes sets up a very interesting match up for South Florida between to welterweights currently on top of their game and could turn out to be a crowd pleasing fight pinning Broward County vs. Dade County. Paredes (22 – 3 13 KO’s) resides in Hollywood, FL meanwhile “Twinkle Fingers” was born and raised in Dade County.
It would be the classic match up of Boxer vs. Puncher, as hard hitting Paredes would look to stop Hernandez’s unbeaten streak meanwhile the high work rate and speed of “Twinkle Fingers” could be over whelming for his opponent. Not to mention Hernandez seems to have added another weapon to his arsenal as five of his last seven fights have all ended inside of two rounds.
