Elcock goes Stateside in plan to regain British title
Apr 12 2009 Sunday Mercury
WAYNE Elcock is banking on a spell in America getting his career back on track as he plots a return to the ring - and a bid to regain the British middleweight title.
Elcock had the title ripped away from him last month inside three rounds by his fellow Brummie, Matthew Macklin.
At the age of 35, most fighters would have considered hanging up their gloves after a defeat like that.
But not Elcock. He is determined to get his hands on the Lonsdale Belt again - and hopes that following the lead of former world champion Marvin Hagler will help him to secure a new title shot.
Elcock is to spend time working out in the States with veteran trainer Goody Petronelli who masterminded Hagler’s domination of the middleweight division.
Elcock aims to be back in action in June and he said: “I have got a trip booked to America when I am going back over to train with Goody Petronelli. That is a fantastic experience.
“So I will be having a little refresher over there and then I will be coming home to relaunch my career and I will be looking to get back into the ring in June.”
Promoter Mick Hennessey has given Elcock a massive vote of confidence and the former WBU world champion aims to repay that support by battling his way back to the top.
“I am just glad to have a promoter who has faith in me,” added Elcock.
“I am not going to finish after a fight like that and I am raring to get back into the ring.
“I want that title back. Fair play to Matt if he thinks that is the best Wayne Elcock that he met. I know there were reasons for what happened and I have just got to get back in there and prove that.
